Walk The Bryson Line
The Bryson Line Walk which took place in June and July 2018 is an example of Tanager’s commitment to community engagement and our support for worthwhile organisations. It was the first fund raising event sponsored and funded by the firm since it was founded in 2012.
The idea for the 569 mile walk came from one of our partners in 2016 who had recently read the “Road to Little Dribbling” by Bill Bryson. In the book, Bryson posited that the longest distance between two points in Great Britain was between Cape Wrath and Bognor Regis and not between John O’Groats and Land’s End as stated in the UK nationality test.
The Bryson Line could not be walked as drawn on the map, due to geographical obstacles and large cities being on the route. We therefore devised 30 days’ worth of walks linking the departure and arrival points. Two Tanager partners and one of our clients, who fortunately was an experienced trekker committed to doing the entire walk averaging 19 miles a day for a month.
We decided to encourage staff, friends and family along with our professional partners to join us when they could. 160 different walkers did a total of 562,073 miles or 12.7 million steps! They collectively burned off 744,514 calories and climbed 794,514 feet!
More importantly we raised over £160,000 for five worthwhile UK charities as a thank you for hosting our Anglo-American firm.
Since the Bryson Line we have adopted a charity and have encouraged employees to take a paid day off annually to volunteer in the community.
